These are stats for cats & dogs with homes (thus does not include shelter animals or feral cats). Extrapolation equations provided by Merritt Clifton, Editor of Animal People News and a leader in this field. Cats, excluding ferals-- Human population divided by 2.65 (people/household), x .568. Dogs-- Human population divided by 2.65, x .534. Both using 2004 Statistics ***Because the feral cat population cannot be accurately estimated and is thus not included, and because the cat/dog population tends to be overestimated by these equations in large metropolitan cities, I feel that these two trends will actually work in our favor resulting in an even more accurate representation of the cat & dog population statistics in these cities.
